Background of the Study

The misallocation of public funds is a pervasive issue in local government councils, undermining development projects and public trust. In Anambra State, inefficiencies in fund allocation often result in stalled infrastructure projects, unpaid salaries, and insufficient social services (Eze & Chukwu, 2024).

Understanding the financial implications of fund misallocation is critical for addressing these challenges and improving governance at the local level. This study investigates the financial consequences of fund mismanagement in Anambra State’s local government councils.

Statement of the Problem

Misallocation of public funds leads to wastage, corruption, and reduced public service delivery. In Anambra State, poor financial oversight and political interference exacerbate these issues, leaving communities underserved and projects uncompleted (Nwankwo & Umeh, 2023).

Despite efforts to improve financial accountability, the lack of comprehensive analysis on the financial implications of misallocation hinders effective reform. This study aims to address this gap.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the financial implications of misallocation of public funds in Anambra State’s local government councils.
  2. To identify the causes of fund mismanagement in local government councils.
  3. To recommend strategies for improving fund allocation and financial accountability.

Research Questions

  1. What are the financial implications of misallocation of public funds in Anambra State?
  2. What are the primary causes of fund mismanagement in local government councils?
  3. What strategies can improve financial accountability in Anambra State’s local councils?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Misallocation of public funds significantly affects financial sustainability in Anambra State.
  2. Poor oversight and political interference are major causes of fund mismanagement.
  3. Strengthened financial policies can mitigate fund misallocation.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on local government councils in Anambra State between 2023 and 2025. Limitations include access to financial records and political sensitivity surrounding fund allocation.

Definitions of Terms

  • Misallocation of Funds: Improper distribution or use of financial resources.
  • Local Government Councils: Administrative divisions responsible for grassroots governance.
